ALICE IN WONDERLAND

In 2010 the National Tin Figure Museum celebrates its 25-year jubilee. On the occasion of this jubilee two special expositions have been organised. One is:

Alice in Wonderland

24 April 2010 - 1 November 2010

Alice Pleasance Liddell

In a unique exhibition we have brought together a collection tin figures from the world of 'Alice in Wonderland', painted with great craftsmanship, and a unique series 'Alice' portraits both from the hand of artist and miniature painter Mike Taylor, who is at the same time a avid collector of the books of Lewis Carroll.

The 20 pen and ink portraits of Alice (using different models) and collectively called 'Aspects of Alice' are executed with remarkable detailed pointillism and took four years to complete. Note: Not a line is visible in any of the portraits - just dots. He portrayed children from his environs, just like Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) did with his muse Alice Pleasance Liddell in his world-famous books 'Alice Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass'.

John Tenniel

Illustration for 'Alice in Wonderland' by John Tenniel

Inspired by Tenniel's illustrations for Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland', Taylor began, in 1995, to convert these images into designs for tin figures. The tin figure series 'Through the looking glass' succeeded the Wonderland series and became the largest tin figure series (79 pieces) based on children's literature. The complete series was finished in 1998; engraved by H.G. Lecke, D. Lepeltier, R. Sonntag, D. Hohrath and distributed by 'Western Miniatures'. Mike Taylor painted the Alice tin figure series in his own masterly way and since the eighties, he has inspired painters of tin figures from all over the world to a new standards. For more then fifteen years (1984 - 2001) Mike Taylor dominated the great international painting competitions. He won numerous awards, among them the highest distinctions in this field: Grand Master from the MFCA, in America and the prestigious 'World Master' awards. Thanks to Mike Taylor's models there are several painters of high level, now.

Don't miss this exhibition because Mike Taylor does not exhibit often.
