Figuur maken

Making a tin figure

Tin figures are made from an alloy of tin and lead (i.e.: Pewter). In France and Italy one does not say 'tin figure' but 'lead figure'. The liquid metal is cast in a casting-mould after which, when cool, the figure may be painted. There are three kinds of figures: flats, semi-flats and round (or 3D) figures.
Flats are cast in a mould consisting of two slabs of slate, one for the front of the figure, the other for the back. The design is engraved on each slate, back and front. The liquid pewter is then added to the mould. For 3D figures, first a master is made, after which a casting-mould is made around the master figure.
